Cooling tower air flow direction ?
I would like to know, can air flow of a cooling tower be from top to bottom rather than bottom to top ? What i feel is, if flow is from bottom to top, then we could get maximum efficiency as water falls from top to bottom.
The air goes from the bottom to the top while the water goes from the top to the bottom. This is counter current flow and is the most efficient at getting contact between the air and the water.
Some cooling towers are natural convection in that the air rises by natural convection but many use fans mounted at the top of the tower to pull air up from the bottom.
