Question about motor oil?
I have been using Quaker state 10w-30 in my vehicles. I recently had to remove the intake manifold due to the gasket leaking. I was totally disappointed with the filth and sludge buildup all over the push rods,rocker arms, valve covers, etc. I mean everywhere and thick .Is there a brand that I could switch too that would be better? It will take forever to get this mess cleaned up to put this motor back together. HELP!!!

what you are finding isnt the result of Quaker state oil it is a problem of sludging. It doesnt matter what type of oil you use. If it sludges there are really only 2 reasons one(which you seem to have eliminated) would be not changing the oil enough. The 2nd thing is the oil is getting comtanimated withe engine coolant. Have a pressure test done and make sure coolant isnt leaking internally. If you are positive about the 3000k mile chagnes then this is the only other reason for the sludge. I own and operate 3 pennzoil quick lube centers and have for the last 18 years. I can tell you that I have seen all types of engines with all types of oils and can honestly tell you that one is not better than the other. For instance I see people giving all these answers. But what most people dont know is that Shell owns Pennzoil, Quaker State, and Wolf's Head. So although the oils have different names on the bottles they are very similar. Valvoline has always been a good oil. The only oil I dont use any more is Kendall. I havent any proof that it is bad but they have been bought out many times in the last 10 years and I can see the difference in the oil color one time the oil will look red like tranny fluid the next time it looks almost clear. Then it looked dark like used oil. I got scared to use it so I stopped ordering it. But any way check the coolant and make sure to change the oil every 3-5k miles.
