OLDS 455 DOESNT HAVE THE UMPH IT SHOULD?
I TOOK A 455 OUT OF A 70 DELTA 88 HAD IT BORED .30 OVER WITH 8.5:1 PISTONS, STOCK CRANK, C HEADS, COMP ROLLER ROCKERS, NEW SPRINGS, MONDELLO JM-20-22 CAM WITH .512 LIFT, EDELBROCK PERF INTAKE,HOLLEY 750 CARB, MSD BILLET DISTRIBUTOR WITH NO VACCUM ADVANCE AND MSD 6A SPARK BOX,STOCK TYPE FUEL PUMP, DYNOMAX CERAMIC HEADERS, 2 1/2 INCH EXHAUST WITH A FLOMASTER TYPE MUFFLERS, AND A REBUILT TH400 W/ SHIFT KIT AND 2000 RPM STALL . NOW.......THE CAR SOUNDS GREAT BUT JUST MAKES A LOTTA NOISE AND NOT MUCH POWER FROM 0-3000 RPM. I HAVE DRIVEN ALOT OF CARS THAT HAVE HAD SIMILAR REBUILDS THAT ARE ALOT MOR SNAPPY AT THE THROTTLE. I HAVE BEEN TOLD MY ENGINE'S CAM SPEC DO NOT MAKE ENOUGH VACCUM FOR THE REST OF THE RECIPE TO WOK TOGETHER. PLEASE HELP.......
It probably boils down to the fact that it's a naturally aspirated engine with a 8.5-1 compression ratio. So your engine likely makes a lot of torque but more modest horsepower. I don't get it though... don't 1970 455's have high compression ratios closer to 10-1? Did you have it rebuilt so it would run on 87 octane or something?
I'm pretty sure your compression ratio is the weak link though. If you have a hot cam, and big carburetor on a low compression big block, it's most likely not going to unwind until higher rpm's.
