i left my emergency brake on while coming home from the dealership. My car is now fucked. please help!?
basically i left it on while coming home from the dealership. I was following my mom home and i couldnt keep up without pressing the gas hard, which i thought was weird but i just ignored it. While i turned onto the street that leads to my complex, it began to smoke or steam or whatever it was. I turned into my complex and turned off the car. That's when i noticed that the e brake was on. I then opened the hood and allowed it to cool off. I refilled the radiator (with water because thats all i had) and then took it for a test drive. It overheated again. It now makes this weird sound when i drive it, like a clunking sound. It is a 2000 Nissan Ultima. Does anyone out there know what i broke in the car?
1st refill with coolant 50/50 mix not water, coolant exchanges heat better than water and doesn't freeze nearly as easily.
2nd you probably completely wore down your rear brakes and need to replace them.
3rd you may have damaged half-axles by driving with e brake on, you put much more strain than normal or recommended on them causing them to get excessively hot which can cause bearing failure.
4th you are lucky your rear wheels didn't catch on fire and burn your car to the ground. I have seen this happen on both cars and 18 wheelers (much more common on 18 wheeler).
5th once brakes are released and car has cooled completely down it shouldn't over-heat further check radiator level for next few days if losing water overheating may have caused ruptured coolant hose, find the leak and replace split hose, hopefully you didn't blow head gasket check for milky looking engine oil. if so you need head gasket replacement.
