I bought new chrome moly push rods for my 61 Baja Bug. They came as two piece, uncut, rods. I was wondering how to install the end on the rod. Do I have to trim the rods to the right lenght? And, is the end just a press in fitting? Any help would be great.
Is the engine stock? If so, then cut them (if need be) to the same length as your old ones and you should be good. If it's not stock (more cc's, compression, cam) then it's crucial to get the proper valve train geometry. The way I used to install the ends was I would set an old lifter on a solid table and place the pushrod into the lifter with the cut end facing up. Put a tiny bit of blue Loc-tite on the end and set it on the pushrod and then I would take another old lifter and set it upside down on top and tap it in with a hammer. Make sure it starts straight.
