stopping a horse once it has bolted?
i ride ex racehorses (not long off the track) who funnily enough tend to like to go fast when they see grass ahead!! just wondering if anyone has any tips on how to stop them once they have bolted...i usually turn them in circles getting smaller and smaller until they slow down if i have the space but this isnt always the case
any advice would be appreciated.
What you are describing is not what I would really think of as bolting - random taking off for no apparent reason, which is dangerous. The horses you are riding are doing exactly what they have been taught to do as racehorses and are ready to respond to what you want, as long as they are not too wound up. Most racehorses are trained to slow down a bit when the jockey drops his/her hands - this is how they give them a breather and save something for the finish. If you can, try to relax your hands and make them think slow. It takes a bit of nerve, as it's the opposite to what you have learned elsewhere but it often works. If you can, try them out in a school first and see what happens when you relax everything in a canter. It's not 100% foolproof - I have owned an ex-racehorse for about 11 years, although he is now retired, and it worked fine if he was on his own; in company he still wanted to win the race. It's really difficult to reverse years of intensive training. There are other slowing techniques, but rather than describe them, I suggest you watch a bit of racing - especially when they are ridden down to the start and see what the jockeys do.
A lot of the strong-arm tactics for stopping horses just don't work on racers as it is a cue to go faster rather than slower.
I wish you luck, but if you can master the tricks, thoroughbreds will give you everything.
