Closet Flange Questions. Remodeling a 25 year old first floor bathroom. House on a slab. After removing toilet and old closet flange, here is situation as you look towards bathroom floor. There is a 4" PVC pipe flush with top of floor tile. Inside that pipe, and down about 4 inches from the surface of the floor, is the end of a 3 " PVC pipe which is the actual waste line. If I install a flange that fits inside of the 4 inch pipe, it can't connect to the 3 inch pipe. This means waste can enter the gap between the 4 inch and 3 inch pipe. I know it's on a slab, but that waste will ultimately leach out into the concrete. Its been this way for 25 years, but is this configuration normal? What is best way to install new flange?
No, what you are describing is not normal. If you are certain that the 4" and the 3" are not connected with some type of fitting, the best course of action would be to glue a PVC coupling on to the 3" pipe then a short piece of pipe and a closet flange. If you do not have room for this you can put a coupling on the pipe and then glue in a piece of 3" pipe that comes up flush to the floor ( or just slightly above the finished floor. Pour non shrink grout around the outside of the pipe (in between the pipe and the floor) and then fasten a repair flange to the floor centered over the 3" pipe.
