Given the above, if a space shuttle or spaceship left orbit and went into outer space, does this mean that the earth would race away from them at the speed of 18. 5 miles a second? or would the earth drag it along so that the ship would not keep pace with earth? how far away would you have to be to no longer be dragged along?
A space shuttle would orbit the sun regardless of it being away from earth. The only way to leave the orbit of the sun is to gain enough velocity that you would leave our solar system. So far, we have sent a couple of probes that have now left the solar system. They are Voyager 1 and Voyager 2. They gained enough orbital velocity by using gravitational assists off of the other planets.
