redoing headers for chevy truck?
i got a set of headers in good condition, the paints flaking off because theyve been sitting for a while. i plan to clean all the paint off. i want to wrap them in fiberglass exhaust wrap. should i coat the headers in high temp exhaust paint first or just wrap them?
i never said they were rusting. please read thoroughly next time. its only a few sentences not a one page article. thanks
these headers are from the late 80's. they are NAPA headers. the real headers when steal wasnt crap.
HI
The best thing to do would be to take them to a sandblasting place in your area and spend the $20 or $30 to have them sand blasted, it's the best way to clean off the old paint and any rust that may have occurred. Then spray them with the black Bar-B-Q- grill paint 1500*.. Then paint them any color you want that you can find in the Ceramic header paint (NOT MOTOR PAINT IT WONT TAKE THE HEAT). Needs to be 1200* or better.
I do NOT recommend wrapping the headers, from what I have seen it promotes them to rust as it holds in moisture. Go to any car show or race event and look at the other cars and trucks none of them well be wrapped.. With the exception of by the starter to prevent heat soak of the starter (which is a problem with headers on most any car) Or I recommend using some kind of heat shield over the starter or you WILL have starting and starter problems. (common problem with headers).. There well be a lot of under hood heat from headers compaired to the stock exhaust sence your going from 2 pipes to 8 pipes.
I used the above painting method with my headers on my truck and they still look new after 6 + years. Remember preparation is the key to a good long lasting job.
good luck
