I installed a new element in my water heater, i noticed the next day that it was leaking...?
it was leaking around the gasket/flange area. A pretty good drip at first, then i drained and took a look, nothing noticeable, so i tried again...still leaks. It was a new element/gasket, so i don't understand.The threads are clean. Could it have been over-tightened first? There is one little place on the thread that seems cut,maybe. I have a Rheem warrior 3500w , and this is a universal screw-in element, are there other shaped gaskets? My main question , I tried some "Datey" great white pipe joint compound on the threads , it said high pressure and temps up to 400 degrees. I put it on the threads, waited a couple of minutes,screwed it in, waited about 5-10 minutes and filled.....still leaks, quite a good leak around the gasket area...is there something i can use to seal this GREAT?.....Would that JB Weld stuff work?..

do i use teflon tape on the threads?
By this time the gasket should certainly be lubricated, but I always wet the new black gasket, usually with saliva, to make sure, as a dry gasket sometimes does under a moving bolt head, that it wouldn't bunch up and allow a leak. That sounds like what may have happened initally with yours, however, now there's apparently something else in play. I wouldn't use JB, that stuff turns into metal and while it may stop the leak, it will, most certainly, circumvent the possibility of ever removing the element again. I would try some silicone sealant, maybe smear some in the area around the threaded hole on the flat surface where the gasket will set and then a little more on the flat of the gasket just before resetting it. Make sure it's tight, but not overly so, and hope for the best.
