My 1997 Pontiac Grand Am SE sounds like a lawnmower!?
97 Grand Am SE. 4 cyl. 160K miles. After acting up out of the blue, I've replaced spark plugs with platinum plugs. Replaced both coil packs. Replaced fuel pressure regulator. It still sounds AWFUL and it's still flashing the check engine light. When my dad replaced the coil packs and then the regulator then took it up to Advance Auto to put it on the code reader .. thing (sorry for my lack of technical jargon) it only showed misfire codes (narrowed down from the long list previously). Replaced the spark plugs and it's still sounding bad and producing a TON of exhaust.
I keep thinking this happened before and we had to replace the ENTIRE housing for the coil packs. We salvaged it from another Grand Am.
Also took in motor mounts to be sure those didn't need to be replaced (again) and they said they were in good condition. The engine does seem to rattle when it's on, but that could just be me.
At this point, any insight would be GREATLY appreciated.
i own a repair shop, and from what i can gather from what you said about it you have a bad miss still in it,and this may still have something to do with the coil packs or the housing, any time you use something from another vehicle and it being used you run the risk of transferring those problems to your vehicle, and this may have been what happened in your case, you may have added to the problems,to get it right you may have to get it re-scanned to see for sure what could be causing this,at this point i don't know what to tell you other than have it re-scanned and see what comes up on it this time, good luck,i hope this helps.
