Three Word Problems Help?
I just need a little help on these word problems.
1. The Caterer for your class picnic charges $1 for each hot dog and #2 for each hamburger. You have $48 to spend. Write a model that shows the different numbers of hot dogs and hamburgers that you could purchase.
2. On Friday, you left for a weekend camping trip with 110 miles on the odometer and 14.5 gallons of gas in the tank of your car. When you returned on Sunday, the odometer read 299 miles and you still had 7.5 gallons of gas left. What was the fuel efficiency of your car on this trip?
3. When you started your shift at 7 AM, 120 steel valves had already been machined and were ready for assembly. At 3 PM, your shift ended and 424 steel valves were now completed and ready for assembly. The target production rate is 36 steel valves per hour. What was the production rate for your shift? Would your supervisor be satisfied with the work place?

1. Hot Dogs and Hamburgers problem
Let x = Number of hot dogs
Let y = Number of hamburgers
The number of hot dogs and hamburgers you can buy must satisfy the following equation:
1x + 2y = 48
2. Fuel efficiency problem
Fuel efficiency means MILES per GALLON
MILES traveled = 299 - 110
GALLONS used = 14.5 - 7.5
MILES per GALLON = (299 - 110) / (14.5 - 7.5) = 189/7 = 27 mpg
3. Production rate problem
Production rate means PARTS completed per HOURS worked
PARTS Completed = 424 - 120 = 304
HOURS worked = 7AM to 3PM (assuming no lunch hour or breaks) = 8
PARTS completed per HOUR = 304 / 8 = 38
The target rate is 36 so the supervisor would be satisfied.
