Making a 1969 Pontiac GTO sound like a drag race car?
Hello, I just bought a 1969 Pontiac GTO. I want it to sound like the 69' GTO's on the drag race tracks. I'm deffinetly going to super a supercharger on it for sure. I dont know that much about cars so I would like you guys to tell me what I should get for the car. Like what exhaust system to get, mid pipes, mufflers all that stuff, pipe size. I'd like the size, type, and brand.
Sounds like you're sold on supercharging. I would probably go with the turbo because of raw performance, but the supercharger is closer to the GTO's character. That will lend a sound of its own (whining), but as far as exhaust, larger diameter is better. Not only will it give better performance, but it will sound so much nicer. My default first recommendation for any exhaust application is Borla, but, unfortunately, Borla doesn't make any exhaust kits for your car. Try a Magnaflow instead. Product #15898 is designed to fit your car and costs about $850. It has everything back of the headers. I saw a video on Youtube of a '69 GTO with Edelbrock heads, Hooker SuperComp headers, and open DM cut-outs (electric valve to adjust exhaust flow and sound). The link is in the sources section. It doesn't say if it has any other modifications, but it sounds absolutely sick. I think it has a larger engine than your's (461 cubes vs 403 cubes stock). You could definitely toss something on for a more aggressive sound, too.
Whatever you decide, enjoy it!
