What is best horsepower i can have on my 350 pontiac motor, its in a 75 firebird, 4 speed, 10 bolt rear end?
I am getting bummed out, I wanted a hot rod but was a nube when I bought the 75 firebird. Today I talked to a machine shop, he said that I would not be able to get 400+ horsepower on my 350. He said maybe 300-325. What does anyone think of that. Not sure what horsepower I am running now, it has a performance manifold, 600 edlebroch carb, headers, Accer distributor cap, thats about it, maybe 250 horse not sure. compression test was done aver cylender was 135, any advise out there.
hey thanks for asking this one and e-mailing me about it first off.
one don't use that machine shop cause they don't know what they are talking about at all!!!
the 1975 firebird was one of the lowest HP cars as the gas crises of the 1970s was on, HP for that car was 170, 200net with a v4 or 155,170net with a v2, but if you have removed the air pump and installed headers you will have gained 30hp just by removing the air pump and 15 to 25hp with the hearders, the intake and carb may have gottin you another 20 to 30hp and the distributor may have gottin a nother 3 to 7hp.
but there so much more you can do, and with the compression new stock was 140 to 150 so 135 is good for a 30+year old motor
but for what you can do, for your exhaust you need to go to a 3" pipes and use an H pipe for low end torq youll make a nother 15 to 20hp and over 25lbs of torq, if you have not yet removed the air pump, DO IT REMOVE IT NOW for a nother 30hp and 15lbs of torq, i would put a cam in it and the one i would use is comp cam's cca-51-240-4 its 244degs@50 duration and .501 left and i would use roller rockers, roller rockers will give you 15hp by them selfs this cam with what you all ready have should get you about 75 to 100hp over what you got now, and youll need a new fuel pump as the old one can not keep up with the carb you have now and will fall way short with that cam, if you want to do some other things there changing your heads go with a set of from an older 350 or 400 or have yours machined for .202 or .208 intake valves and have the machine shop take .020 off the heads.
and there still so much more you can do but heres where it starts to cost, but with what i told you should put you in at about 415 to 425hp.
if you need or want more info or help e-mail me again and ill help you as much as i can.
just to add to some of what i said and to answer some of the answers you have been told one in a pontiac big block and the small block just like an olds are the same blocks, the 265 to the 455 IS THE SAME BLOCK and will bolt right in!!!! the 265, 350, 400 and 455 is the same block the 321, 389 and 421 was not the same.
also keep in mind that that car has a 290 to a 305 rearend in it and that will hurt you more then the low HP motor, if you want to get up to speed fast youll need to chang this to a no less then 355 gear but i would put a 373 in it as this best match's your set up of what i think you want to do, and a shift kit wil help alot as well.
morton6 needs to do alittle more home work, one i have a 69 firebird and have owned way to many pontiac to name em all, and .501 left will work with out any problems as i have done this not only to my 69 but i just did the same set up i told you on a 1975 firebird, anything higher then that and yes you will have to do more work to the heads and use a spacer in the valve covers as pontiac's have a low clearance and theres just not the room, as for the valves the 2.02 or the 2.08 valves will work again with out any changes, but if you use the older heads with the 2.11 or the 2.18 intakes and the 1.96 exhaust then yes you find that you need to chamferre the top of the cylinder bores or use a head gasket that is .045 thick.
this is what i do for a living every day 7 days a week!!!
and if i dont know i wont say i do and the set up i told you I HAVE USED!!!!
and just so you know the part numbers i gave you is from summit
