I asked a form of this question earlier but only got one response so I'm trying to get better answers here. After much deliberation, I finally decided to buy an American car for my project race car (once again, not for street racing). I have been looking at the GM lineup which consists of Monte Carlos, Impalas, Camaros, and GTOs. I thought about the Dodge Avenger but I don't know if I can find it cheap. I would really love a Mustang if its one of those late 80's to early 90s model. Which car is worth trying to upgrade? If I were to choose a non-SS Chevy, would it still be good? Is GTO the only Pontiac brand that is capable to be race-worthy? I need some awesome American muscle to destroy those annoying Honda Civics with their mismatching body kits.
How about Grand AMs and Grand Prix?
That is a very good and very common question. When considering a starting vehicle, you want to look at the pros and cons of all the choices to narrow it down. For a project race car you want something that will be light, nimble and have a steady/common parts supply available. The late 80s early 90s mustangs will be the best choice in all of those categories. A coupe(trunk) bodied lx mustang will be light and easily set up for any form of racing with a readily available aftermarket/performance parts supply and clean/cheap bodies are everywhere.
The good thing about that body is that it also accepts most any engine engine setups and can easily be made into a potent race car.
