Converting Normal Lancer to Evolution 3?
Hello all,
I have a stock lancer year 1994 that has the same body type as the Evolution III. I was wondering if it's possible to mount it up with the evo 3's front mount intercooler with a stock engine? or if possible what other auto-geared performance engine that I can replace it with? I'm planning to fully convert it to an Evolution 3 but with the exception of keeping it Automatic transmission. Any ideas?
Also side question, what exhaust options am i able to put in? with the stock lancer engine.. 2.5 inches?
What trim level/model is your Lancer? A chassis code (Cxxx-xxxx) would be immensely helpful. I'm been a Mitsubishi Mirage/Lancer owner since 2002 and had the same project in mind for my car too, but need more information to help you accurately. Auto Vladistock (http://english.auto.vl.ru/catalog/mitsubishi/lancer/) will help identify which model Lancer you have.
www.mirageforums.net will have all the info you could ever want, in the 4th Generation threads. there are quire a few Mirage to Evo threads, but I'd reccomend reading EvoRage's threads specifically. He's a friend of mine that has done the whole job to his car, including making it RHD, a 5-speed and AWD too.
Since your Lancer is the RHD sibling of the 93-96 US Mirage sedan, they share all of the same framework, mechanical parts, etc. Same thing goes with the Evo 1-3, with exception of the rear subframe. Oh, an intercooler wouldn't be of any use if your car isn't turbocharged, but I'm sure you knew that already. It will bolt up though, but you'd have to get the plumbing custom made unless you're ready to swap in the 4G63 Turbo engine on the spot.
As for making an automatic Evo, the 4G63 Turbo's gut wrenching torque will destroy any 4-cylinder Mitsubishi automatic transmission in a matter of days, if not minutes! The only one that would come close to handling the power would be the auto from a Lancer GSR (chassis code CD5A-SRGF). But one thing to remember is that the GSR (not the Evo GSR) is only rated at 205HP, so you'd be running it beyond its rated capacity. The 5-speed in the GSR is the same as the Evo models though (W5M33 I believe). If you're serious, swap to a 5-speed while you have your car apart.
Making your car AWD will require cutting out your trunk floor and welding in one from an Evo 3, along with attaching the rear subframe and prop shaft support (between front seats on underside of car)..
All in all, my reccomendation is to wait and save up your money and do the whole project in one fell swoop, swapping out all of the old stuff, checking over the new engine and getting it all in at the same time. The Mirage Forums has all of the details about it, so buckle up to do some homework
