say you have a large fish aquarium with a heating element in its bottom which can glow red hot when turned on. if you fill the aquarium with liquid gasoline to the top covering the heating element with over a foot of liquid, then if you plug in the heating element and let it glow red hot, will the gasoline ignight? it needs oxygen to catch afire. im thinkink fuel will just boil and evaporate.
No, it will not ignite (under the optimal circumstance that you just described). As long as the heat in submerged and the liquid stays under it's flash point, you will be fine, in theory.
In the real world, however, the tank will fill with fumes. When the liquid evaported to the point that the heater was exposed, you would be in grave danger of overheating the element and blowing yourself to kindom come.
It'd be cool to set it up in a field, and see if the tank exploded, though. Maybe I'll e-mail 'Mythbusters' to see if they will try it.....
