Looking at getting a Ford Lightning..are they reliable?
I am mostly a chevy guy but I like the Lightnings. My friend has one and he is always blowing the doors of Mustangs and rice mobiles. It is a fun truck and sounds great. I am fairly experienced with mechanics and have been working on cars for several years. He mentioned having a couple problems with the heads and spark plugs blowing out a couple of times. I haven't had any experience working with forced induction as far as a s/c so I am wondering how well built they are for a daily driver. Anyone own one that can tell me a bit about them?
I guess it would depend on the year Lightning you are looking at. I own at 94 with the 5.8L (351 Windsor). I bought it used and it has always run great however when I had intake problems with it and went to buy a new one I found out that the engine had been discontinued 2 years after it was build and that the part was no longer available unless I could find one in a junk yard. Let me tell you I search the web and still couldn't come up with a decent replacement. Finally I had to resort to going to a metal fabricator and having them weld my aluminum intake so that I could get my truck up and running. As far as gas mileage it does better than most large trucks but definitely doesn't get great mileage. If you decide to get one check into it first to make sure that the engine you are getting has replacement parts available, I learned my lesson.
