Can a mild V8 handle nitrous?
I have a 1978 El Camino with a mild 350 and I was thinking about installing a nitrous system for that "show appeal" and extra horsepower. I noticed that some plate kits aren't too pricey. I'm interested in about a 100hp plate nitrous kit. Does anything need to be upgraded to handle nitrous?
Anyways, I don't get how a stock engine can handle the abuse of nitrous and not a supercharger or turbo. How do they activate exactly? Is it basically like hitting a switch and getting an additional 100hp instantly? Also, where do you refill bottles, how many shots does one bottle hold, and how much does it cost to refill them?
Thanks
It's a 1973 350 with stock internals. 8.5-1 compression
I read that a stock 350 can handle a 100-125hp shot if the fuel pump is upgraded to a larger unit.
You'd have to define "mild". The correct answer is it "may" handle it. It all depends on how the engine was built. Is it a 4 bolt main block? Splayed caps or 2 bolt machined for 4 bolt (all 4 straight bolts)? Pistons (forged, cast, hypereutectic)?? Type of rods? Bolts/studs (stock or ARP, etc)? Head gasket type? What compression are you running now? Basically, all 3 types do the same thing... force more volume of air into the cylinder to be compressed in the combustion chamber. Turbo and superchargers do it mechanically with an impeller. NOS does it chemically. I've seen stock 350's hold up under 75-100HP shots of NOS but if the engine isn't buillt to handle it, you're taking a chance at blowing a perfectly reliable engine (like others I've seen..). The rest of your Q's you'd have to call a local shop and see how much.
EDIT-response to additional details.... With stock internals and only 8.5:1, you could get away with maybe something smaller than 100hp shot for a while but it will not last. And no matter what, the stock cast pistons WILL.... I repeat... WILL burn up rather quickly with NOS.
