So the race off of pit road determines track position for the cars that come into the pits during a caution. Ok. Two follow up questions:
1. Not all cars have to pit during caution, correct?
2. If only 10 cars pit during caution, how are they positioned back into the field with the cars that did not pit during caution?
1. They don't have to, it's their choice, but it is a tradeoff, track position, or new tires and more fuel?
2. Typically, by the time those 10 cars get back out, the other cars are probably already past them, so they are positioned in the order they come out behind the people who did not pit. I'm pretty sure that even if the pit stop is only a splash of fuel, the pit road speed limit is slower than the regular speed under caution, so they would typically come out at the rear end of the field.
