need some assistance on a starting and final timing for a clay oval stock car. I set the static at 34 degrees on the dampener and set the distibutor in. The timing should be right but it starts hard and it fumbles above 3000 rpm. what is the problem? We run this engine generally between 5800 and 6400 rpm.
If it "fumbles" above 3000 in neutral it probably has too much timing or the distributor cap needs to be phased.
First hook up timing light, start and check timing to be sure your 34 degree mark lines up with the zero mark on the timing cover. Rev the engine to be sure it stays there and does not advance. (It may jump around a couple of degrees when reved, this is normal) You did disconnect the vacuum advance and welded the dist shaft?
Next get an old dist cap and cut a large hole in the plastic near #1 dist cap lug. Leave the lug intact. Start the engine in a low light (garage etc) point the timing light at the rotor and the cap lug and make sure the rotor is in the middle of the lug when the cylinder fires. If it isn't you need to rotate the distributor plate (like the vacuum advance does when it's hooked up) until it lines up, then lock it in that position.
If you weld the dist shaft when the mechanical advance is midway your chances of having it come out phased right is better.
If it is still hard to start when the timing is right and the cap is phased have the driver spin the engine with a starter button and turn on the ignition with a toggle while it is spinning. Another option is to buy an expensive gear reduction starter.
