96 Stratus PDC starter fuse blowing wont start. starter good What next?
(2.5 6cyl)1st it acted like it was starving for fuel (fuel pump) stalls and jerked around occasionally. Then we shut it off and went back to start it and not even a click. I checked the fuses. in the power distribution center under the hood. the 20 amp fuse keeps blowing for the starter/ignition. (obvious short somewhere). and the 2 fuses to the left of it have no power (key on) before it blows I get a few turns on it and you hear a click but it won't turn over. Pulled the starter and had it checked. It checked out good. Now I'm really stumped! Is there a common short in these vehicles? I hate electrical! Not my bag. All help[ is very much appriecated in advance.
first you need a wiring diagram, you are walking in the dark, the circuit that is blowing your fuse seems to be the one that gets the raw voltage to the starter, when you turn the ign switch power in this wire goes to the starter relay and from there straight to the starter solenoid, very simple circuit,
when you remove the starter it may spin, it doesn't means that it is good, because you have no load on the starter, you can only check the rpm it is spinning and compare with the no load rpm specs, but I guess you do not have those either
and you can't determine the rpm of the stared under no load either... my advise?? put the starter back, go to the relay and apply power directly from the battery to the starter ( remove the relay first)solenoid, you'll recognize it because it shows ground all the time, even when the switch off, if your starter is OK it will
spin and star the engine if the switch is on, if it dosen't your jumping wire is gonna get very hot and you have to replace the starter, if it is OK then you isolated the short to the wire that goes to the ign switch, I suspect that you have a shorted ign. switch and that account for the other problem that you have
