Does it matter what octane or brand of gas you put in your car?
I recently bought a new sports car. The manual says that it can run on regular gas, but premium will give it a small boost in horsepower and an increase of 1 or 2 mpg. After buying different kinds, I feel that Shell's premium made the eingine sound better. However, I wonder if it's just all in my head. Is there a difference in quality between gasoline brands or octane levels?
The answer really depends on the compression ratio of your engine. Higher octane fuels are designed for use in an engine that has a compression ratio that is higher than what is currently considered as normal. While the computers in new vehicles can normally adjust the timing to deal with the gas you are using, it is best to follow the manufactures recommendations.
