Astra 1.4i over revving on idle & probs starting?
Vaux Astra 1.4i california - 1993 on L
Prob 1) Intermittent problem. Sometimes it turns over but doesnt catch, giving it a bit of throttle sometimes helps to get it up & running. This problem happens whether it warmed up or from cold.
Prob 2) It's a bit too enthusiatic when i first start up! VERY high revs (dont need to touch the throttle sometimes it drives itself!) and the revs on idle are all over the place - racing one minute then dipping really low then racing again etc etc. Autochoke maybe???
Ive had a lot of work done on the car over the last few months all done by a local garage apart from cap, arm, leads, oil filter which my neighbour did for me. All parts were new & not from scrappy (or so they say!! lol)
Rocker gasket, water pump, timing belt, plugs, ht leads, oil filter, brake master cylinder, nsr wheel cylinder, (top) breather pipe, distributor & cap, rotor arm, oil change, brake fluid change, temperature switch, fan switch.

This sounds to me very much like the idle control valve (ICV) and it is a very common problem with the older Vauxhalls. All you need to do is remove it from the throttle body and give it a damn good cleaning, aswell as the throttle body itself. Use carb cleaner or something of the like to do it. 99% of the time it will cure the problem, if not then a new ICV will be needed but they are quite cheap anyway (but still clean out the throttle body before replacing it).
