Need help with 1985 Mercruiser 120 GM 153 rear end seal project.?
Removed the rear drive/prop without any problem. Next is the housing which has the tilt hinges on it. Removed the lower hinge pin but it appears your have to remove the tilt hinge nuts before you can get to the upper hinge pin. The picture shows on of the trim pivot nuts. Do the tilt nuts have to come out? If so, how? Thanks in advance!
i'm not sure which "rear end seal" your trying to talk about either.
bellows and gimbal bearing are the parts that most frequently need replaced. u' joint bellows failing can allow water into the boat, and it passes through the gimbal using ruining it.
there is also a little O ring around the cooling water line, and a bigger one around where the exhuast goes through the transom. both of those are accessed from inside, the exhuast seal usually needs the motor lifted out of the way to get at.
for most transom assembly repairs, removing hte bolts the drive tilts on is either nessacry or makes the job much easier. its a special tool, 1/2" 12 point version of an allen key.
and you need another special tool to line up the gimbal bearing properly if you are replacing that.
its possible that just doing the prep work, getting the drive out of the way, and taking it in for whatever small transom repair performed by a professional with all the right tools might be your best bet. once the needed work has been done you can slap the drive back on yourself and save the labor time on that job.
