Can you turn a Dana 44 front axle into a Dana 60?
I know squat about axles. Everyone has to start someplace though, so I guess now is as good a time as any. I broke the pinion on my 1979 F150's front axle. It's a Dana 44 and I was wondering if the ring and pinion are what makes it a Dana 44 or if it's the whole axle assembly including axle shafts and even the housing that makes it half ton? What I'm basically getting at is this...Can I put a Dana 60 ring and pinion into a Dana 44 axle to make my Dana 44 stronger? This is probably going to sound like a really stupid question to someone who knows what they are doing, but like I said...gotta start somewhere

The Dana 60 parts will not fit into the Dana 44 housing, you'll have to replace the whole axle assembly if you want to upgrade. After breaking the pinion, you'll probably want to replace the whole assembly anyhow, because it sure seems as if you've got more power than the original axle assembly could hold. (which in my opinion, is a lot of fun!)
