I have a 1978 Camaro and I need to replace the transmission. I am wondering what is the best transmission: TH350, TH400, or 700R4. The Camaro is my daily driver, but I also enjoy the occasional burnout and drag race between stoplights. The engine is a 350 cubic inch V-8, Flowtech Headers with cherry bomb glass packs bolted directly to headers (no catalytic converters), a Holley 650 cfm carb, and Edelbrock Performer intake, Comp Cam with .470 lift, and Accel plugs and wires.
The 700R4 is nice for the overdrive, the key to making it last is a very good aftermarket trans cooler.
The TH400 is my favorite transmission out of the choices you gave, it is very strong and hard to beat for forgiveness.
The TH350 is a great transmission but will require modifications to handle abuse.
OPTIONAL: The Powerglide, I use this transmission in both of my Impala's for the reason that they are about the cheapest to rebuild and I have put them both through more abuse than transmission I have ever used. If you have the power, these are definitely a great choice. 2 speed.
