You see that oblong bit at the very top of the one in the picture? Your chain ought to have one of those. At either end is a tiny hole, and a slit that leads up to a bigger hole in the middle. The balls on either end of the chain fit in that big hole, and then the chain slides down the slit and holds them in place. Simply grasp that part, and gently pull the chain up and towards the center of it. One side may be soddered closed, with only one side able to move.
