Capturing footage from 8mm tape?
i have an old sony handycam from the 1990s (not sure what make as it was given to me by my grandpop) and im trying to capture the footage from the camera onto my computer so its digital and editable, but windown movie maker says its not indexed. i cant change anything like what file its recording to on the camera, and im using the easycap capture card to change it from the ports on the camera to usb.(not sure what the ports are but hey fit in a spark plug, and there is no firewire). you can see the footage on screen as it captures but as it finishes it says the file is not indexed and cannot be imported. i used another video editing software and that wouldent work either. i cant afford any other editing software but any ideas would help. pleeese help ive been stuck with footage on my camera for months and noone i have asked can help, this is my last resort.

Hi, I've done this a couple of times. It's a little cumbersome but works. You'll need to borrow a friend's miniDV video camercorder and buy a firewire card for your computer (approx $20).
1. Dub the video from your 8mm to the miniDV camcorder. You'll need to connect the cable (from your 8mm) that you use to connect to your TV to the inputs on the miniDV camcorder. Make sure your friend's miniDV camcorder has this. My Canon Elura does.
2. After it's on miniDV tape, digitize the miniDV footage to your computer. This is done by connecting the miniDV cam to your computer via a firewire card (installed on your computer) and a firewire cable. You'll need software on your PC for this. Most firewire cards will come with this software. If you have a choice, bu a firewire card that included Pinnacle Studio software. It's easy to use and good.
It will cost you a little cash to do this but it works and you'll also end up with a backup copy of your 8mm footage on miniDV tape.
