It would be very interesting to watch the Nascar Sprint Cars racing in the rainy weather. Why aren't they designed to race in the rain?
The simple reason why there is no rain racing on paved ovals are the rain tires themselves. They are made from a very soft compound AND are grooved to improve grip.
The grooves do not allow the tire to dissipate heat like a racing slick does. That, combined with the soft compound and the extreme forces of racing on an oval, make using rain tires impractical.
The tires would fail after 2-3 laps.
NASCAR, like the IRL and F1, WILL run road course races in the rain. Last year's Nationwide Series race from Circuit Gilles Villeneuve in Montreal was the first NASCAR race to use rain tires.
