With relation to welding; stick welding, how do Joules apply to how much heat the pipe your welding can absorb?
I am a pipe welder who just become aware of information on the scientist Joules and electricity. To be more specific, I was speculating if it would be possible to pre determine, prior to welding pipe (two pieces of pipe to be welded together) each pipe is 4 inches in diameter carbon steel and .375 thick; what amperage would be ideal to set the welding machine at, or after each pass of metal I put on this pipe in joining them together, how much or less amps I can go up or down on the welding machine settings?
its an equation, q*n
q=EI*60/S
E=voltage
I=current
60 = unit conversion
S= travel speed (in/min or mm/min)
n= process efficiency eg GMAW = about 0.8 or 80%
this will give you an answer in J/mm or inch
if you want the answer in kJ simply EI*60/S * 1000
If you are looking for amperage range, specifics are needed. Process (GMAW, SMAW, TGAW), electrode diameter, type of material you are joining, what position you are welding it in etc.
and yes there is a way to do it. Alot of books and sources are used to pre determine what the heat input that should be used for a specific material. But really how much heat input the material can absorb before the weld becomes hazardous to the weldment depends strictly on the type of material and in most cases the carbon content.
hope this helps
