I want to do the split option and am trying to gather as much info as possible. I would like to be in the guard all through my 4 years of college. If I still like the military after college, I would go active. I know in the ARNG your total commitment is 8 years, but some is in the IRR. Instead of entering the IRR after college/4 years, can I switch to active duty?
And for my senior year of high school after I complete basic, will that count as part of my contract years (i.e should i enlist for 5 years to cover the college years and HS senior year?)
Your local army recruiter will have all these answers. Your time in Basic Training and AIT count toward your enlistment obligation which is 8 years regardless of the type of service whether ARNG, IRR or Active duty.
If you go ARNG you can be called up at any time for federal service or by your state's governor during a crisis. IRR you can be called up to active duty at anytime during your 8 year obligation. How you choose to serve during that obligation is up to you and in some case the needs of the Army.
