Trailer Dirt Late

It features a college student who finds a "rock" in a cave. He finds out that it is actually a dragon egg covered in dirt when it starts shaking. Shortly after cleaning the egg it hatches and he raises the dragon while his landlords are under the assumption that he is secretly keeping a cat. At one point it escapes and eats up flowers in the neighbor's garden. When the dragon grows huge they try to hide it in a huge trailer. A gas station blows up at some point (by the dragon's fire) and there are probably government folk who want to take the dragon away.

I don't remember the name at all and would love to own it on DVD or some other format.
@Nick Lanese: Sorry, it's not Pete's Dragon. The dragon in the film is a puppet and is not animated. The setting is modern day (1990s, maybe 1980s?).
