I have a 1984 245 volvo turbo.
I just added a large intercooler, and had to drain the tranny fluid because the oil lines running to the rad needed taking off and tweaking. I replaced with pennzoil dexron III oil (which is what the manual calls for) and it sits at the correct level on the dipstick after running and warm etc.
The previous owner did something to the trans to make it shift later and harder. Now after the fluid change, the electronic OD doesn't work and it shifts very late and doesn't seem to want to go above 2nd gear unless you redline it.
When you put your foot down it holds the power and goes well, it just won't shift.
I hate automatics, so more reason to get the manual swap under way, but I cannot do that for at least a month. I cannot drive it like it is right now, it's a pain in the arse.
Any ideas? What could mess up after a fluid change?
Ok first, did you misread the manual because sometimes a owners manual will cover different models simiular to yours. The manual is a good source for information, but commonly, that info is etched on the tranny dipstick, it will also tell you what kind of automatic trans fluid to use. Although the manual does say what to use, I would in this case rely on what is etched on the tranny dipstick. I am not saying you used the wrong oil, but in rare cases, it can happen. If all this checks out, it may be a shift sensor that is on the tranny that is going bad. Take it to a reputable transmission shop and have it tested. It may or may not be a big problem. Hard to say what it is I do not know of anything that could change just from a fluid change. It could be something that failed at the same time, just bad timing.
