Im getting a new turbo engine, what all do i need?
Hey, I blew the engine in my car and im looking at a new engine with a turbo in it (JDM imported). I know a fair share about cars, but turbos are a little new to me. Im wondering if anyone with a little more knowledge would help me out (BOV's, turbo timers etc.) in what i need and dont.
The engine comes with:
Wiring Harness
Alternator
Power Steering Pump
Injectors
A/C
Exhaust Manifold
Starter
Intake Manifold
5 Speed Transmission
I own a 92 Celica GT-S.
Thanks!
I don't see the ECM on the list. I would get one.
It will have a built in BOV installed, you just might not like the way it is plumbed. But live with the lack of BOV noise.
A turbo timer would be nice, the main thing it does is to keep the engine running after you turn the ignition off. This is to help the turbo cool off. You can get around the problem just by letting the engine idle before shut down.
A boost gage is nice, one that shows boost and vacuum. The turbo engine has vacuum in part of the performance spectrum.
A boost controller would also be nice, if you want to run more boost.
An after market oil cooler would help also. But one for power steering installed on the oil inlet tube would suffice.
Speaking of after market add ons, a inter cooler in front of the radiator helps also. There is a ratio of air density based on temperature. The short version is that air when compressed gets hot, so if you cool the air off so many degrees it is equivalent to so many more pounds of boost. I don't remember the magic numbers. The point is that a 24" inter-cooler at 5 lbs boost can yield the same performance as a stock inter-cooled unit running more boost.
Good luck.
