SPARK KNOCK/ PRE-IGNITION. My 86 Dodge 600 2.2 has one or the other. Please help how do I solve this problem?
I have a 1986 Dodge 600 2.2L (no turbo) 89,000km. The car has spark knock or pre-igniton. Not sure which. It every once in a while as you go to take off will knock a little then go away as you press the gas pedal. It only hapen at the idle to the point of first hitting the gas pedal then is completely gone.
I've read it could potentially cause engine damage. How do I solve this problem.
The plugs, wires & the distributor are all fine. I just had the engine timing and idle re calibrated. And had a check for vacuum leaks fixed @ the EGR valve (replaced) new o2 sensor.
So does anyone know how I can stop this from happening other than putting a higher octane gas in.
the 2.2 was real bad to do that, and on setting the timing that's real tricky also, unless they used an advanced timing light on it they may have got it off a few degrees and that's enough to cause that too happen to it,id have it rechecked again,if the engine wasn't fully warmed up when they set the timing on it ,it will be off some,i have owned a few of those cars before and they was always hard to set the timing on,most of the ones i had though would run really good on regular gas,i only used a higher octane fuel when it was cheaper to buy,you might try running a hotter plug in it also, that will help burn the gas a lot better, good luck.
