i have a slightly modified 86 trans am that i think is having ignition problems?
the car has the following mods: an accel super coil HEI, and wire set 8.8, and an edlebrock carb. The problem is this, on normal acceleration, I get a slight miss, and the tach jumps to about 3000 rpm, but from the exhaust note I can tell that the engine is not racing, so the tranny shouldn't be the problem. If I give it more gas, the problem goes away, and the car has plenty of pull. I have already checked the coil ground, and it seems to be fine
I have a chassis ground, but don't know of it's condition
would that be the big one or the small one, it has both
forgot to mention that the accel coil is of the in cap variety made for direct replacement, and only (like the tuneup) has about 15-20,000 miles on it, but I have been having the problem almost from the start, could it be the ignition control module
the ignition module is only the stock one, neglected to opt for the accel module
you could be a little lean off idle. start it warm it to normal operating temp 180 + degrees remove air filter. crank lincage back by hand till approx 2500 rpm give or take a little. now when its been at 2500 rpm holding the linkage dead steady for 10 seconds, start to close the choke flap to half way or so. if you have a flare in rpm you are too lean. you have an edelbrock. (carter afb) there are two little plates on top next to the choke flap on both sides. they have no shape. or its wierd .anyways; loosten the 1/4" screws a few turns (dont take them out) and flip the plates around to the point where you can extract the metering rods. these control your fuel flo thru the jets bigger =less gas. smaller =more gas .there should be two springs one on each side. leave them there and get a couple sizes smaller metering rods.
>back to the distributor if you have never changed the cap and rotor. those rotors accumulate allot of carbon from the black button on the cap. it causes carbon tracks. if you can see a carbon track it will look like a pencil line drawn by a spastic. you cant remove them. replace parts. also you have a remote coil . those coils have a problem on the primary side (the regular wires)the connectors that plug into the coil get all f'd up and loose. if you remove them and look and see a bunch of white and black markings. they are bad. buy new coil pigtails from the dealer.put dielectric grease in the new ones terminal holes.
good luck. tom
